In a village, a shepherd had hundreds of goats. Daily he used to take it to the field under a mountain. There he leaves his goats to graze and he takes rest under a huge tree till afternoon. After his lunch he sleeps for an hour and then at evening he returns to his house with the goats.
One day at evening, the climate was very pleasant and it started to drizzle. The shepherd thought surely the black clouds will bring heavy rain. So, he gathered his goats and started to move towards the house. While he stepped ten feet from the hill he heard a murmuring sound. He followed the sound and stood before a huge rock. Behind the rock a small wolf was lying down with shivering. He took pity on it and decided to take care of it. He carried it on his shoulder to his house.
He gave goat’s milk to it. It drank and felt comfort in the shepherd’s house. For few months the shepherd provided goat’s milk and cow’s milk to the wolf. It grew very fatty and healthy. Now the shepherd gave training to the wolf to safeguard and how to protect the goat. All over the night the wolf watched and truly served for the shepherd.
On seeing the wolf’s responsibility the shepherd felt very happy. He believed the wolf and slept inside his house peacefully.
Days rolled on. The shepherd realized that some goats were missing. One mid-night he went to his herd. He saw that the goats were sleeping but the wolf was not there. So, he searched the wolf nearby. Suddenly, he heard a goat’s bleat from the bush. Immediately, he rushed to the bush and there he saw that the wolf had killed the goat and started to feed on it. The shepherd got very angry and started to beat the wolf with a wood stick behind the bush. With pain the wolf died.
The following morning he said to the neighbour’s and street passers about the wolf’s deed, “whatever creature it might be, surely one day or the other it will show its nature’s attribute. The wolf taught a lesson for me. It is impossible to change its nature’s attribute.”
